Polna. (Polná, Bohemia/Moravia), a non-coloured copper-engraved topographic view of the town of Polná by Matthäus Merian il Vecchio (1593–1650), published in 1650 in Frankfurt within Topographia Bohemiae, Moraviae et Silesiae; dimensions 22 x 33 cm; condition Excellent.
Description from the seller
Splendid and authentic panoramic view in a copper engraving (engraved aquaforte) of the historic town of Polná (listed as Polna in the title), located on the border between the historic regions of Bohemia and Moravia (present-day Czech Republic). The work was executed by the renowned Swiss-German master engraver Matthäus Merian the Elder (1593–1650) and published in Frankfurt in 1650 within the monumental opus "Topographia Bohemiae, Moraviae et Silesiae". The panorama magnificently describes the city skyline in the mid-17th century, dominated by the large fortified castle on the left and by the imposing spire of the parish church in the center. At the bottom of the plate there is a precise legend in German (marked with the letters A to E) identifying the main buildings and strategic points, including the town hall (Rathhaus), the road to Prague, and the surrounding ponds. At the top left there is a decorative heraldic shield enclosed by a wreath, originally left blank by the publisher. The work testifies to the exceptional documentary rigor and the finesse of line that have made Merian’s urban scenes unrivaled masterworks of 17th-century European cartography. A sheet of great historical importance and collector’s fascination.
