Specimen Ipsa childreni (J. E. Gray, 1825) from Mauritius, 27 mm jumbo size, GEM quality, original authenticity, year 1982, not a CITES-listed species.
Description from the seller
Product Description & Scientific Data
Scientific name: Ipsa childreni (J. E. Gray, 1825) – formerly Cypraea childreni.
Common name: Shrunken-head Cowry or Rib-headed Cowry (engl. Children's Cowry).
Quality grade: GEM (absolutely flawless collector condition; glossy enamel-like surface, perfectly preserved ribbing without any wear, knife-sharp outer lip and undamaged ends).
Size: 27 mm – large specimen! While standard pieces typically measure around 18–20 mm, this 27 mm cowry stands out as a true giant form (Jumbo / Big Size).
Morphology: Unique within cowries: The shell is covered along the entire dorsum and base with fine, raised, transverse ribs (ridges) that end in the sharp teeth of the aperture. The coloration is typically warm golden-yellow to light brown.
Family: Cypraeidae (cowries).
Origin & Habitat
Geographic origin: Indo-Pacific (the distribution is widespread and ranges from East Africa/Mauritius through the Philippines and Melanesia to Hawaii and Polynesia).
Habitat: A cryptic-living species. It hides by day in deep, narrow crevices and caves of living coral reefs, usually at depths of 10 to over 30 meters. Since living animals are rarely found and most often only empty shells are recovered from reef rubble, flawless GEM pieces are very rare
