Original Tomado folding stool – white with black – Dutch vintage design – circa 1960s/70s

A wonderfully recognizable piece of Dutch domestic design: this original foldable Tomado stool combines a light metal tube frame with a comfortably upholstered seat in off-white, neatly finished with a contrasting black edge.

The clever cross frame can be folded, making the stool take up little space when not in use. Exactly the kind of practical and functional design that made Tomado prominent in post-war Dutch interiors.

On the frame there is still a portion of the original red TOMADO label. This documents the manufacturer directly on the object. Tomado is an originally Dutch brand; the name derives from Van der Togt Massa-artikelen Dordrecht. The company was founded in 1923 and grew strongly after World War II. According to the brand history, Tomado products were present in a very large number of Dutch households mainly in the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

The design of this stool fits perfectly within that period: a simple white-lacquered steel tube frame, compact construction, plastic/vinyl upholstery and especially a lot of attention to practical use. Based on the execution and design, we dating this specimen to roughly the 1960s–1970s.

Online documented Tomado stools come in various versions and heights. Well-known older fixed Tomado tabourets are found in steel and wood, but this specimen clearly represents another, foldable household model. Condition
The stool is in authentic used vintage condition with clear signs of aging and use.
On the white-lacquered metal frame there are scattered scratches, paint loss, small spots and localized superficial oxidation visible. The original red Tomado label is heavily worn but still recognizable.
The light seat shows signs of use, slight discoloration, minor stains and the normal slight folding of previously upholstered material. The black edge also shows normal signs of use.

The presence of these signs emphasizes the original, unrestored vintage character. Signs of use are shown in the photos; the photos are an important part of the condition description.
