Scientific name: Doxander vittatus vittatus (Linnaeus, 1758) – formerly Strombus vittatus vittatus.
Trivial name: Striped winged snail (engl. Vittate Conch).
Quality level: GEM (absolutely flawless collector condition; the highly glossy shell, the tower-like apex and especially the fully developed, graceful outer lip
Size: 95 mm (9.5 cm) – gigantic! Normal shells of this species range around 50–65 mm. At a proud 95 mm, this magnificent specimen ranks among the largest known pieces worldwide and is a true enrichment for demanding specialist collections of the Strombidae family.
Special feature: As with winged snails, this species has a slender, crescent-shaped operculum, which the animal uses for leaping movement in the living state.
Family: Strombidae (winged snails).
Origin & habitat
Geographic origin: Cebu, Philippines (Central Visayas, Indo-Pacific). Localities around Cebu are famous for particularly thick-shelled and vividly colored expressions of this species.
Habitat: A marine shallow-water species. It lives benthically on extensive soft and muddy bottoms as well as seagrass beds at water depths typically 5 to 30 meters and is usually collected by local fishermen.
