Cilicia, Mallos.
Ca. 440-390 BC.
Obol (Silver, 9 mm, 0.63 g).
Obv: Half-length bust of winged figure facing, head to right, holding solar disk in both hands.
Rev: MAP. Swan with closed wings standing left; all within incuse square.
Reference: Casabonne Type 1. SNG Paris 374.
Mallos was an important city of ancient Cilicia, situated near the mouth of the Pyramos River in southern Anatolia. Tradition attributed its foundation to the legendary seers Mopsos and Amphilochos. Its riverine position supported trade and strategic importance, while its distinctive silver coinage reflects a blend of Greek and Anatolian traditions. Mallos later came under Persian, Macedonian, Seleucid and Roman rule.
