Description from the seller
Attention: due to customs regulations we can only ship inside the European Union. Please ensure you have a valid EU shipping address before placing a bid.
Viking Age, silver alloy amulet pendant in the form of a stylised Yggdrasil (Tree of Life). Linear and circle-dot motifs decorate the front of the pendant. Complete with integral suspension loop to allow the pendant to be worn on a cord or chain, plain reverse side.
-> The overall silhouette of the pendant mimics a stylised and serrated leaf or tree structure, representing the sacred cosmic tree that connects the nine worlds.
Size: ± 30.1 x 10.4 mm
Condition: good solid condition and wearable. Dark patination with minor surface irregularities and signs of wear consistent with age and use.
Certificate of Authenticity (PDF) is available upon request for all lots with a hammer price of €100 or higher.
-> In Norse cosmology, Yggdrasil is the sacred, eternal ash tree that serves as the central cosmic axis holding together the nine worlds of the universe. It represents the interconnectedness of all life, destiny, and rebirth. Its roots reach deep into the underworld while its branches reach high into the heavens, housing various mythical entities like the dragon Níðhöggr (Nidhögg) at its base and a wise eagle at its crown.
Yggdrasil is also profoundly tied to Odin, who famously hanged himself from its branches for nine nights to sacrifice himself to himself and gain the wisdom of the magical runes.
Catawiki disclaimer:
This object has been carefully examined for its material and surface characteristics.
Laboratory analysis (e.g. XRF) is not routinely undertaken in private collecting, and destructive testing is avoided as it causes permanent damage to archaeological material.
Before modern hallmarking, gold and silver alloys varied depending on local resources, recycling practices and economic conditions.
