Description from the seller
Splendid and authentic map of the Duchy of Mantua, finely engraved on copper at the end of the eighteenth century. The map offers a detailed and strategically accurate overview of the Mantuan territory just before the historic Napoleonic campaigns in Italy. The work includes precise topographic details and highlights in particular: The fortified city of Mantua, protected by the characteristic system of river-lake waters formed by the Mincio. The hilly area of upper Mantua including Castiglione delle Stiviere and Solferino, geographic nodes that became famous theaters of confrontation during both the Napoleonic era and the Risorgimento. A detail inset (inset) positioned at the bottom right, dedicated to the course of the Po River and the neighboring territories of the Ferrara area.
Clear and fresh impression on seventeenth-century laid paper. Original margins well preserved. Gentle and natural patina of time that lends charm and authenticity to the sheet. No invasive restoration or significant tear.
