Description from the seller

West Friesland – Silver ducat 1677 – Enkhuizen

Catalogue: Dav. 4910; Delm. 972

A particularly striking silver ducat from the West Frisian minting of the late 17th century, minted in 1677 at Enkhuizen. This specimen stands out for its exceptionally high quality and strongly preserved relief, bringing the knight, the heraldry and the finer details of the dies very clearly to the fore.

Obverse: Standing armored knight to the right, with raised sword and at his feet the crowned provincial arms of West Frisia. Inscription: MO. NO. ARG. PRO. CONFOE. BEL. WES.
Full inscription: Moneta Nova Argentea Provinciarum Confoederati Belgii Westfrisiae – ‘New silver coin of the United Provinces of the Netherlands, West Frisia.’

Reverse: Crowned Generality’s coat of arms, with the year 1677 above it. Inscription: CONCORDIA RES PARVAE CRESCUNT – ‘By unity small things grow.’

The coin was produced in the private mint of Dirk Bosch in Enkhuizen, with dies by Christoffel Adolfi. His engraving work comes to the fore particularly clearly on this specimen due to the pronounced relief: from the knight’s equipment and the provincial arms to the heraldic details of the Generality’s coat of arms.

The silver ducat was an important trade coin of the Republic. The standing knight embodies the resilience of the province, while the Generality’s coat of arms and the motto Concordia res parvae crescunt emphasize the united strength of the United Netherlands.

A characterful West Frisian ducat from 1677, in which the exceptional preservation and the powerful relief wonderfully highlight the seventeenth-century mint engraving.
