Description from the seller
An elegant and expressive Art Deco bronze sculpture by Affortunato Gory (Italian, active circa 1895–1925), depicting a kneeling female dancer in a graceful and particularly dynamic pose.
The composition is characterized by the powerful upward movement of the figure. The body bends subtly to the side, while both arms are raised high above the head and end in finely modeled hands and fingers. The slightly bowed head and serene facial expression form a beautiful counterpoint to the dynamism of the pose, giving the sculpture both sensuality and refinement.
Gory paid particular attention to the contrast between the smooth, softly modeled surfaces of the female body and the more detailed rendering of the hair and facial features. The bronze has an appealing warm golden patina, which beautifully accentuates the sculptural forms and the play of light over the body.
The sculpture stands on an elegant oval pedestal of figured marble, whose warm natural color variations harmonize especially beautifully with the golden hue of the bronze.
Signed “A. Gory” on the sculpture.
Affortunato Gory, born in Florence and later active in Paris, belonged to a generation of Italian sculptors who combined the classical Italian sculptural tradition with the elegant and increasingly decorative formal language of French art at the beginning of the 20th century. He became best known for his refined female figures, often characterized by graceful movements, harmonious proportions and a refined surface treatment.
A particularly decorative and attractive example of Gory’s oeuvre, characterized by the flowing silhouette, expressive movement and elegant early Art Deco appeal.
