Old English teapot by James Dixon & Sons – Sheffield – Ref. 1477 – Beautiful collectible piece
A teapot carrying with it a genuine page of the history of English silversmithing.
This elegant antique piece bears the signature James Dixon & Sons – Sheffield, one of Britain's great metalworking and silversmithing houses, whose history began in Sheffield at the start of the 19th century. The manufacturer became known for its table and service items, notably teapots, coffee pots, tea sets and decorative pieces, exported far beyond England.
At a time when the ceremony of tea occupied a central place in British society, these objects were not merely utilitarian: they fully participated in the art of entertaining and were designed to take their place on tables and in drawing rooms.
This teapot is a beautiful illustration of that.
Its generous body is rhythmically carved with deep vertical ribs that catch the light. The long spout is particularly worked, as is its elegant foot with botanical and scroll motifs. Its large dark handle provides a remarkable contrast and further emphasizes its typically English appearance.
Underneath the piece is the mark James Dixon & Sons, accompanied by the reference 1477, a particularly interesting element for identifying and documenting this model.
The teapot measures about 31 cm in length and 16 cm in height and has a substantial weight of 822 g, giving it a remarkable presence when displayed.
