Magnificent ogbodo elephant mask - Igbo - Nigeria (No reserve price)

Igbo Elephant Mask Ogbodo Enyi

This type of mask, called Ogbodo Enyi, represents the spirit of an elephant, an animal regarded for its strength and determination.
On the back is an anthropomorphic face representing the elephant spirit's child, called Ntekpé.

This mask is often complemented by a majestic raffia costume and is primarily worn by men.
But it is exceptionally worn several times a year by a woman, notably in the village of Izzi, and it enacts the oracle's decision to ward off an epidemic of infant deaths in that village.
