According to legend, the dynasties of the southern kingdoms of the Republic of Benin originate from Tado, a town in present-day Togo, and were born from a mythical couple: Princess Aligbonon of Tado and a leopard. These leopard or panther couples stood in pairs on the ancestors' altars of the king.
