Dating: ca. 1940–1952
Provenance: from the Decaders Gallery collection
Description and context:
Shallow dish with a wavy, lobed rim with a double edge and a low foot. The interior bears a silver edge pattern of scale-shaped loops. Over it are blue flowers with purple centers and yellow middles, with green leaves. The exterior wall is ivory-glazed. Chippendale is the shape name used by Rosenthal and appears in the brand; the same form exists in many decors. The dating is approximate: dealers place the Bahnhof Selb mark in the years 1936–1952.
Condition:
Good. Silver overlay on the foot: several spots where it is worn away, the white glaze is exposed. Silver rim: small white spots where silver is missing. All silver parts: black buildup, unpolished. Outer wall: a faint spot. No cracks or broken parts observed. See the photos. Offered as a decorative object, not intended for use with food.
In the interior:
Fits in a classic or eclectic interior, on a sideboard or in a vitrine display. The silver shines or fades with light, making the blue flowers stand out more.
Shipping:
Professionally packed in a sturdy box with cushioning material, and for fragile objects a double box. Always insured, shipped with Track and Trace. See feedback from previous buyers.
Attribution and sources:
Marked Rosenthal, Werk Bahnhof Selb, the former Zeidler factory that purchased Rosenthal in 1917. The decor is a hand-painted factory decoration. A painter 'Kretzschmar' is not documented in any consulted source and is not claimed as an artist. The silver content has not been established and no silver mark was seen.
