One fossil tooth of Otodus obliquus preserved in matrix from Morocco, dating to the Paleocene of the Paleogene, an authentic original specimen weighing 1 kg with dimensions 13 cm high, 9.5 cm wide and 5.5 cm deep.
Description from the seller
Otodus obliquus is an extinct species of giant prehistoric shark, lived between the Late Paleocene and Early Eocene, about 65-45 million years ago. It belongs to the extinct family Otodontidae.
Dominating the oceans of the world, this legendary creature is scientifically famous for being considered the direct evolutionary progenitor of the Megalodon.
Paleontological studies conducted on these exceptional creatures establish that they could reach a length between 8 and 10 meters, well beyond the average size of a modern orca or a great white shark, and a weight of about 15 tons. They fed mainly on large bony fish, mammals and other sharks. Since sharks' skeletons are made of cartilage alone, the only fossil remains that have reached us are some very rare vertebrae and the robust teeth. The name itself, Otodus, derives from ancient Greek and literally means "ear-shaped tooth", due to the characteristic shape of the root. The teeth are large up to 9-10 cm in height, have a crown triangular in shape with edges that are completely smooth and sharp and feature one or two minor lateral cusps (small tips located at the base of the main crown).
This lot presents a beautiful specimen of a tooth of OTODUS OBLIQUUS still residing in the authentic matrix in which it was found.
Also present and in perfect condition are the two lateral cusps. It is an authentic tooth that has not undergone any restoration work, as evidenced by the complete absence of glue traces.
Significant dimensions: the height of the tooth alone is 8.2 cm with a base of 4 cm
With the matrix the measurements become XXL:
Height 13 cm, width 9.5 cm and depth 5.5 cm.
Happy bidding!
