Technics SB-302 vintage 3-way monitor loudspeakers, produced during the absolute golden age of Japanese hi-fi (circa 1974–1976) by Matsushita Electric. Technically in 100% good working order and visually in neat vintage condition with light signs of use consistent with age.
For the true vintage audio and design enthusiast, the SB-302 is a particularly interesting piece of 1970s technology. What immediately catches the eye is the iconic acoustic lens (diffuser) for the tweeter. This high-quality design element – at the time mainly used on the heaviest high-end studio monitors – provides an unprecedented wide and uniform horizontal dispersion of the high frequencies. As a result, the stereo image is laid out large and the 'sweet spot' in the listening room is greatly expanded.
Aesthetically, the speaker exudes pure mid-century craftsmanship: a heavy, wood veneer enclosure that beautifully contrasts with the dark, matte black baffle and the recognizable light-colored, ribbed woofer cone. That ribbed structure (corrugated cone) is not a cosmetic choice, but a technical solution to reduce resonances and distortion (cone break-up) in the diaphragm. Because the SB-302 is designed as a sealed system (acoustic suspension), the impressive 250 mm woofer delivers an extremely tight, fast, and controlled bass foundation without any wooliness. The dedicated 120 mm midrange driver ensures that vocals and instruments stand out beautifully from the lower end. Through the continuously adjustable attenuator on the front panel, the treble range can also be seamlessly tuned to the room’s acoustics. A relatively rare, very musical loudspeaker that makes a strong impression both sonically and in terms of industrial design.
