Description from the seller
Beautiful and guaranteed authentic early 20th-century Italian bronze sculpture, titled "Pescatorello" (The Little Fisherman), designed by the renowned Neapolitan artist Giovanni Varlese (1888–1922).
This atmospheric and vibrant figure portrays a young Neapolitan fisherman with a distinctive wide-brimmed hat and a loincloth, pressing his freshly caught fish against his chest with a proud smile.
Varlese, in the tradition of his master Vincenzo Gemito, was known for his prowess in masterfully capturing the raw and pure street and fisher life of Naples.
Features & Quality:
Signature: The figure is deeply and clearly signed with "VARLESE" on the bronze rockwork.
Casting quality: This is an early, high-quality casting from the early 20th century (circa 1910). The fisher figure is completely solid-cast, ensuring exceptionally high quality and durability.
Bottom: The interior of the hollow rock pedestal shows the original, embedded artisanal mounting strip and the classical traces of the traditional sand-casting or lost-wax process from that period; see photos.
Patina: Supplied with a beautiful, original dark patina with occasional light, natural aging wear on the raised edges (as at the toes), where the pale-golden bronze color softly shines through.
Pedestal: Mounted on the original, solid and precisely finished marble base.
Total height: 41 cm (Bronze: ca. 38 cm | Marble: 3 cm) Marble footprint dimensions: 18 x 13 x 3 cm
Total weight: 4.2 kg Bronze weight: 2.3 kg (solid casting of the figure) Marble weight: 1.9 kg
The artwork is in excellent, original antique condition with no restorations or structural defects. The marble is fully intact with no significant chips or deep scratches.
