Decorative Mermaid and Lotus Diptych,, circa 1960s–1970s
A wonderfully decorative diptych of two tall framed prints depicting an underwater world with mermaids, lotus flowers and brightly coloured fish, probably of Asian origin and dating from around the 1960s–1970s.
Designed as a pair, the two compositions mirror one another, with the mermaids turning towards the centre when the panels are hung side by side. Their elongated golden bodies curl into sweeping tails, while the large dark brown hair forms create a strong and highly stylised silhouette.
The underwater setting is particularly attractive. Long, slender lotus stems rise vertically through the deep olive-green water, while creamy-white lotus blossoms appear above the waterline. Small brilliant orange fish provide vivid flashes of colour and give the composition a playful, almost dreamlike quality.
The combination of flowing figures, strong vertical lines and unusual proportions gives the pair a striking decorative presence. Their narrow format makes them particularly effective beside a doorway, console or cabinet, or simply hung together as one sculptural wall composition.
Although the exact maker and country of origin have not been identified, the subject matter and decorative language suggest that the prints are probably of Asian origin.
The prints are presented in slenderblack with gilt accents frames, glass fronts and are in very good condition.
