Description from the seller
Lot Description: Rare and valuable collector's portfolio titled "La Danse" (Twenty drawings by Paul Renouard, transposed into harmonies of colors), published in Paris in 1892 by the renowned editor and engraver Charles Gillot and Théodore Child. This is Copy No. 188, belonging to the main edition numbered from 1 to 275, printed on authentic ultrafine Chinese paper of exceptional quality. The editors' official notice certifies that the original plates were destroyed after printing, making any reissue impossible.
Composition of the lot included in this sale:
- The original cardboard folder (cover and back cover).
- The title page and the printer's mark.
- The double-page introduction "Avis des Éditeurs" signed by Charles Gillot and Théodore Child.
- The "Table des Harmonies" (color index) and bibliographic note.
- 16 original plates (out of the initial 20), superb engravings depicting ballet scenes and backstage at the Paris Opera, delicately mounted along the top onto their original double-bordered backing boards.
Condition: Good overall for a work over 130 years old. The central China paper of the works is very well preserved. Natural spots of oxidation (foxing) distributed, mainly located on the outer margins of the presentation boards, not affecting the beauty of the central drawings. Slight crease from handling on the cover board of the protective folder.
A unique opportunity for bibliophiles, Art Nouveau enthusiasts, and lovers of the history of dance and the Paris Opera ballet.
