M.C. Escher (1898-1972) - Metamorphose

Reproduction of M.C. Escher's Metamorphosis II.

Made from the original woodcut from 1939-1940 and divided into 4 parts, which together form an artwork of almost 4 meters.

Signed and dated in the woodcut with MCE and XI'39- III'40. When joined, the 4 parts form a metamorphosis with the same beginning as end, and once framed this yields an almost four-meter-long artwork by M.C. Escher.

In four strips of 104 x 22 cm, 100.5 x 22 cm, 100.5 x 22 cm, and 104 x 22 cm, they are contained in the original tube.

Tube dimensions: 26 x 8 x 8 cm. The reproduction is in excellent condition with no discolorations, creases, folds, or other imperfections and is shipped in the original tube.

Maurits Cornelis Escher, born in Leeuwarden and died in Hilversum, is one of the world’s most famous graphic artists. His visit to the Alhambra palace in Granada, Spain, with its lush tilework that adorned the architecture, inspired Escher with the patterns of interlocking shapes. By replacing the abstract tile patterns with recognizable figures, Escher developed this metamorphosis in the late 1930s.

In "Metamorphosis II" the process begins on the left and progresses to the right with the word metamorphosis. This grid then becomes a black-and-white checkered pattern, which subsequently becomes mosaic patterns of reptiles, a honeycomb, insects, fish, birds, and a pattern of three-dimensional blocks and red peaks. These blocks then become the architecture of the Italian Atrani, connected by a bridge to a tower in the water, which is actually a piece of a chess piece. There are other chess pieces in the water and the water becomes a chessboard. The chessboard leads to a checkered wall, which then returns to the word metamorphosis, causing the process to start all over again.
