Description from the seller
Coffee table, Padauk wood carved with dragons, Anglo-Indian, 19th century - India
Typology: Coffee table, small dining table or side table
Materials: Padauk wood (red wood)
Style: Anglo-Indian
Period: Second half of the 19th century
Origin: Private collection, France
Good condition for its age and use
Dimensions: 80 x 100 x 100 cm
Impressive Anglo-Indian Padauk wood table carved with dragons, from the second half of the 19th century. Made in colonial India, from the outset intended for export to Europe, mainly to England.
Circular top, with its entire profile carved with fine vegetal and floral motifs, finished with a de-bissed cord. It is supported on three feet, joined to a single central shaft, profusely carved. The feet feature imposing dragon carvings of great volume. Notable is the scale detail, a repetitive pattern of great realism that simulates the texture of the reptile’s skin.
Padauk wood, or redwood, originates from central western Africa and tropical regions, from Nigeria to the east to Congo-Kinshasa and south to Angola. It comes from a large type of Pterocarpus species. Usually called narra or mukwa, padauk wood is a valuable resource due to its robustness, resistance and stability once worked. Its reddish color is quite distinctive, though it can be mistaken for rosewood. It is also known as vermilion due to its carmine color. Its heartwood will be pale orange or deep reddish-brown, and the wood darkens when cut and exposed to light. With a generally straight grain, the texture of African padauk is open and coarse, with a fine natural sheen. It is termite- and insect-resistant and very easy to work, which enables this type of carving, even heavy openwork.
A highly decorative design, with strong visual impact and aesthetic appeal. This table can be the centerpiece of a living room, an entryway or a bedroom; a dining table for 2-4 people; or even a library table for working. A high-end decorative piece that adds a distinctive touch to any room!
Shipping of the product will be paid by the buyer depending on the dimensions, weight and destination. We will contact you to arrange it and agree on the budget.
