Million-year-old natural history in an extraordinary form: this impressive 2-piece set of petrified wood has been fashioned into large, high-gloss polished spheres, beautifully preserving visible structures of the original wood.

The two spheres could hardly be more visually varied. The left specimen wows with intense orange, copper, honey, and cream tones that run in broad, lively bands across the stone. The natural grain still resembles grown wood fibers in places, giving the sphere a warm, almost fiery glow.

The second sphere forms an intriguing counterpoint. Here dark chocolate brown, black-brown, cream, and distinct rose to purple areas dominate. Especially the strong elongated structures create an extraordinary sense of depth and make this piece a true focal point.

The spherical form allows the pattern to be viewed all around—every turn reveals a new image, with additional grains, color fields, and mineralized structures coming into view. The careful polishing further intensifies the color and showcases the preserved details of the petrified wood.

As a pair, they create an exciting interplay of warm fire-orange and deep earthly tones. At the same time, each sphere is a completely individual natural product, with a pattern that does not occur exactly twice.

It is a fossil wood dating back 200 million years, all parts from a log or branches have been silicified, meaning that organic components were little by little replaced by silicon in the form of jasper, chalcedony and more rarely opal. Without the organic parts, all the living matter was replaced by stone: there are growth rings, cell separations, almost like worm cracks.
Its features are those of the mineral that would have pseudo-transformed the wood: the silicon.
And that’s what we call a "petrified wood" in the common language.
