Cindy Sherman - Cindy Sherman - 2015

The main theme of Cindy Sherman’s work is the staging of female models. The American artist draws on the stereotypes imprinted in our collective visual memory in a media-saturated world. In this perfect game of roles with costumes, masks and prosthetics, during which her identity almost vanishes entirely, in her photographs Sherman (born 1954) moves along a fine line between staging and parody, analyzing clichés and fears. The artist became famous thanks to her multi-part photographic series Untitled Film Stills (1977–80), in which she embodies female characters drawn from fictional film scenes of the 1950s. Since then, her artistic principle has not substantially changed. In her later series, characterized by large-format color photographs, Cindy Sherman tackles themes such as fashion photography, fairy-tale characters, horror scenes, and the ladies of high society.
