Description
Geographic map of the province of Overijssel, in the eastern Netherlands, with the neighboring areas of Friesland, Drenthe and the border regions of Germany. The network of waterways, inhabited centers and territorial subdivisions are rendered with a dense engraved design; the hand coloring highlights the borders.
At the bottom left, the title Over-Yssel appears in an illustrated cartouche with coat of arms, scale, and ornamental motifs. A wind rose occupies the left margin of the map. The whole combines geographical function with a decorative apparatus characteristic of early 18th-century Flemish cartography.
Historical-artistic note
The map bears in the cartouche the signature «I. Peeters» and, under the scale, that of Harrewijn as engraver. The Antwerp publication in 1725 by Juan Bautista Verdussen places the sheet within cartographic output aimed at describing, in a compact format, the provinces of the Netherlands.
Condition Report
Vertical editorial fold in the center, also visible on the reverse, with slight browning along the fold line. Sporadic foxing and small traces of time, especially at the edges. Hand coloring at the borders. Reverse side white.
