Specimen Ovula ovum (34 mm) in GEM condition, a rare extreme matured dwarf form from the Philippines.
Description from the seller
Scientific name: Ovula ovum (Linnaeus, 1758) – belonging to the family Ovulidae; in German-speaking regions known as the Large Egg Cowrie, Egg Porcelain Cowrie or simply Egg-Kauri.
Origin & Localities: Widely distributed in the tropical Indo-Pacific; this high-caliber specimen comes from the deep reef zones of the Philippines (region Bohol / Cebu).
Habitat: Coral reefs and shallow lagoons at depths of 2 to 20 meters. The animals live in close symbiosis with soft corals (especially the genus Sarcophyton), from which they feed. While the active, jet-black mantle firmly envelops the shell, after cleaning the pure, snow-white calcified shell comes to light.
Size & Condition: 34 mm – This is the absolute highlight of this offer! While Ovula ovum typically reaches a substantial average size of 70 to 100 mm, a 34 mm specimen is a phenomenal, fully developed dwarf form ("Extreme Matured Dwarf"). Such tiny yet fully formed shells with a thickened outer rim are an extreme rarity among collectors. Condition GEM (Immaculate Museum Quality: glossy, ultra-pure white surface, perfect, dark-purple to reddish-brown interior, no cracks or growth faults)
SKU Oberdiek Ovula ovum
TAGS: Nautilus, Sea Shell, Nautic, Maritime, Nautical Shells, Snails, Collectible, Rare
