Description from the seller
Riga – Stephen Báthory – 3 Groschen (Trojak) 1583 – Silver
An attractive and historically important silver 3 Groschen (Trojak) minted in Riga in 1583, during the reign of Stephen Báthory (1576–1586), King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania.
The obverse features the crowned bust of Stephen Báthory facing right, surrounded by the Latin legend:
STEP · D · G · REX · PO · D · L
The reverse displays the coat of arms of Riga, dividing the date 15–83, with the denomination III above and the characteristic inscription:
GR·OS / ARG·TRIP / CIVI·RI / GEN
This is a hand-struck silver coin from the period of the Polish rule over Riga. The irregular flan, strong relief and surviving details are characteristic of 16th-century hammered coinage.
The 1583 Riga trojak is a collectible and relatively scarce type. One documented 1583 Riga example, variety Iger R.83.1.d (R1), graded XF/XF+, sold for €138 hammer, while an AU/UNC example of variety R.83.1.a (R1) achieved €238 hammer in November 2025.
