Opera glass from the company Emil Busch, Rathenow! About 1875.
Biedermeier Historicism.
Emil Busch (born August 6, 1820 in Berlin; died April 1, 1888 in Rathenow) was a German industrialist in fine mechanics and optics. He was involved in the invention of the wide-angle lens.
In 1868 Busch was appointed Royal Commercial Counselor by the King for his merits. In 1872 he transformed the company into a joint-stock company to facilitate the necessary investments. It did so with the help of the Quistorp & Co. association bank. The share capital of the corporation amounted to 275,000 talers. In the newly formed Rathenower Optische Industrie-Anstalt formerly Emil Busch A.-G., Emil Busch thereafter held high positions as a “Delegate of the Supervisory Board” and as a Director.
The company subsequently achieved a dominant market position. Thanks to informal arrangements with Zeiss, it restricted free competition. Carl Zeiss had his son Roderich undergo a commercial apprenticeship at Busch. Busch, in turn, contributed a report that the state would grant Zeiss’s Glass Technology Laboratory a subsidy of 35,000 talers. Busch, who had never studied, died in 1888. Through him and through Johann and Eduard Duncker, the town of Rathenow became synonymous with high-quality optical devices.
The theater glass impresses with its very good condition.
