2. Ford and the Original 1949 Custom Convertible
The 1949 Ford represents one of the most important turning points in Ford’s post-war history.
After World War II, American manufacturers initially returned to production with updated versions of pre-war cars. Ford broke decisively with that approach for 1949 and introduced an almost completely new automobile.
The new Ford was presented in June 1948 and featured a much more modern, streamlined body with integrated front and rear fenders and no traditional running boards. This clean, slab-sided shape later gave the generation its famous nickname:
