Exceptional lot of 3 Venetian masks – Cartapesta – Venice Carnival – Baroque decor
Set of 3 decorative Venetian masks in cartapesta
Stunning set of three Venetian carnival masks, made in cartapesta (papier-mâché) and richly decorated in the traditional spirit of the Venice Carnival.
The lot gathers three very different models, each featuring particularly elaborate decorative work blending colors, gilding, reliefs, floral motifs, arabesques and elements inspired by the Venetian theatrical and musical universe.
The largest mask, about 40 cm tall, is especially spectacular with its structure composed of numerous spikes and extensions in black and gold textile. Its face is decorated with musical motifs and a small scene representing an architectural landscape of Venice. Trimmings, gold ornaments, cords and a blue element resembling stone complete the ensemble.
The second mask, about 37 cm, features a stylized female face in a remarkable composition of red, white, black and gold. Its elongated shape and numerous raised decorations give it a strong decorative presence.
The third mask, about 30 cm, presents a long nose characteristic of masks of the Medico della Peste / Plague Doctor type, here treated in a very decorative interpretation with deep blue, ivory and gold tones. Musical scores are also integrated into the decor.
