Bronze Early Medieval Viking amulet titled “The Wolf of Fenrir,” a stylised bronze wolf’s head pendant from circa 9th–11th century, original/official and in good condition.
Description from the seller
A fascinating zoomorphic amulet in the form of a stylised wolf’s head, inspired by the powerful animal imagery of the Viking world.
The wolf occupied a mysterious and formidable place in Norse mythology. Above all stands Fenrir, the legendary great wolf, son of Loki, whose immense strength was feared even by the gods. Bound by the magical fetter Gleipnir, Fenrir became one of the most dramatic figures in the stories surrounding Ragnarök.
The elongated muzzle, prominent ears and strongly modelled head of this amulet create a remarkably expressive creature. Its archaic appearance evokes the wild and untamed character of the northern wolf—an animal associated with strength, instinct, courage and the dangerous wilderness beyond the safety of the settlement.
Symbolically, the piece may be viewed as “The Wolf of Fenrir”: not necessarily as a literal representation of Fenrir himself, but as a talisman drawing upon the formidable symbolism of the wolf in the Norse imagination. Worn close to the body, such an image would have made a striking personal emblem, evoking strength, protection and the fearless spirit of the North.
The beautifully aged surface and dark patina give the amulet an especially atmospheric character, while its original suspension opening allows it to be worn today as an impressive historical-style pendant.
A powerful and enigmatic piece—the watchful wolf of the old North, carrying an echo of the legends of Fenrir.
