The Twin Ravens of Odin, a circa 9th–11th century AD bronze Viking-style zoomorphic amulet in good original condition, with a central circular opening and two opposing raven heads, suspended from a silver chain and acquired from the Netherlands in 2025 from a private collection.
Description from the seller
An extraordinary and highly decorative Viking-style zoomorphic amulet, dominated by a remarkable symmetrical composition of two opposing raven-like heads.
In Norse mythology, the two ravens Huginn (“Thought”) and Muninn (“Memory”) were the companions of Odin. Each day they were said to fly across the world before returning to their master, bringing knowledge of everything they had witnessed. Because of this tradition, the paired ravens became evocative symbols of wisdom, watchfulness, memory and the far-reaching gaze of Odin.
Here, the two creatures appear to guard the large circular opening at the heart of the composition. The circle may be interpreted symbolically as an eye, solar form, or gateway, giving the amulet an especially mysterious character. Beneath it, the balanced curved forms and repeated circular ornament create an almost ceremonial symmetry.
The combination of the Twin Ravens and central circle gives the piece a compelling symbolic interpretation: two watchful guardians surrounding a sacred centre—Thought and Memory watching over the path of their bearer.
Its aged metal surface, rich patination and intricate ornamentation further enhance its archaic northern character. Suspended from a silver chain, it becomes an impressive statement pendant with a powerful mythological presence.
