Traditional Dogon Walu antelope mask from Mali, carved in wood with a cubist rectangular face, 30 cm high, 7 cm wide, 3 cm deep, in good condition with some wear and age stains, sold with stand.
Description from the seller
traditional antelope mask, called the Walu mask, originating from the Dogon people of the Bandiagara Escarpment in Mali.
This mask is distinguished by its highly stylized cubist and geometric facial structure, typical of Dogon primitive art. The box-shaped rectangular face houses two deep hollowed eyes, surmounted by two superb vertical horns adorned with horizontally grooved textures. At the back, the rough interior of the skull reveals a patina of dark, natural wear related to handling.
The base and the upper edge are fitted with a series of regular perforations used to attach the traditional headdress made of braided plant fibers (sansévirière). A very beautiful collectible object bearing witness to the richness of Malian cosmogony and the rituals of the Awa secret society (funerary dances of the Dama). Fast and careful shipping with tracking number.
