This sphere was carved from a single, large natural fluorite crystal originating from China. Fluorite, typically, tends to form fragile, well-defined crystals, hard to obtain in masses large enough and compact enough to allow a perfect polish as in this case. The surface, mirror-polished, reveals a complex internal architecture of cubic crystals and translucent bands that alternate in shades of emerald green, turquoise, and deep blue, with golden reflections generated by fine natural inclusions. Each corner of the sphere seems to enclose a mineral landscape, a play of light and transparency that varies according to the incidence of light. Fluorite is a fascinating mineral, known since ancient times for its perfect crystal symmetry and its fluorescence under ultraviolet light, from which the name itself derives. In the past it was called “fluorescent spar” and used both as an ornamental mineral and as a carving stone. Scientifically, it is calcium fluoride (CaF₂), belonging to the cubic system, with a hardness of 4 on the Mohs scale.
