The Watchful Shield of the North — Symbolic Protective Amulet, a bronze Early Medieval Viking shield-shaped amulet (circa 9th–11th century AD) with a central eye motif and concentric rings, acquired from an auction house in the Netherlands in 2025 from a private collection; condition: good.
Description from the seller
A striking shield-shaped amulet with a powerful concentric design, its surface dominated by circular bands surrounding a mysterious raised central motif.
The composition strongly recalls the visual language of a warrior’s shield: an outer protective boundary, successive inner rings, and a prominent central boss-like element. The repeated circles create an impression of layer upon layer of protection, as though the heart of the amulet is enclosed within several defensive barriers.
At the centre appears an intriguing eye-like motif. Symbolically, this can be interpreted as a watchful gaze—an emblem of vigilance, awareness and protection. Surrounded by concentric rings, the central “eye” seems to look outward from behind its protective shield, giving the piece an especially mysterious character.
The irregular raised decoration around the outer border adds another dimension. Rather than a perfectly ordered geometric ornament, it resembles a rugged enclosing wall, emphasizing the contrast between the chaotic outer world and the guarded centre.
Within a Norse-inspired interpretation, the combination of shield and watchful eye evokes the ideal of the vigilant warrior: protected against danger, yet always alert to what approaches from beyond the boundary.
Its deep green patina and aged bronze surface beautifully emphasize the relief and concentric ornament.
