Description from the seller

Beautiful and authentic Charlemagne balance, also called pile à godets or nested weights, made of bronze and dating from the 18th century.

This type of ancient weighing instrument consists of a bronze cylindrical case equipped with a hinged lid, a clasp, and a handle containing a succession of small weights in the shape of cups that interlock with one another.

The presented specimen retains six inner elements of decreasing dimensions, down to the terminal small weight.

Brand and an old hallmark on the lid.

Probably from Nuremberg, a major center of production for these weights.
