Attic kylix with a mythological scene, a high‑quality reproduction in the tradition of Attic red‑figure pottery dating to the 5th century BCE, width 41 cm, in excellent condition, acquired in 2013 from a private collection in Germany, with authenticity not conclusively established.
Description from the seller
Attic kylix with mythological depiction – 5th century BCE – high-quality reproduction / authenticity uncertain
Description
For sale is an impressive Greek Attic kylix in the stylistic language and pictorial tradition of Attic ceramics of the 5th century BCE.
The bowl shows a figurative mythological scene in the design characteristic of Attic red-figure pottery. Notably, the carefully executed figures, ornamental elements, and the central interior scene stand out. The kylix has two side handles and a pronounced foot; both the exterior and the interior are decorated.
The craftsmanship and the condition make the object an interesting piece for collectors of Greek art and classical antiquity.
Important:
The exact dating and authenticity of the piece could not be scientifically confirmed based on the information available. It is possibly an exceptionally high-quality reproduction or historizing replica; an ancient original cannot be ruled out on the basis of the available photographs. A thermoluminescence or material-technical examination as well as scholarly expertise have, to my knowledge, not been conducted.
Therefore the kylix is expressly offered with undetermined authenticity and not guaranteed as a clearly ancient original.
Condition
Good, corresponding to its age or production. Visible signs of use, wear, and minor irregularities on surface and painting are present. The photos are part of the description and should be carefully reviewed before purchase.
