Daniel & Arter (D&A) – Silver Plated Egg Coddler / Egg Boiler – England – Early 20th Century
An elegant and highly decorative English silver-plated egg coddler or egg boiler, manufactured by the renowned Birmingham silversmith Daniel & Arter during the early 20th century.
Designed for refined breakfast service, this beautiful table accessory consists of an egg-shaped vessel with a removable four-egg holder, raised on an elegant tripod stand. The water inside the bowl was gently heated by a spirit burner positioned underneath the stand (not included), allowing eggs to be cooked or kept warm while being served directly at the breakfast table.
The design perfectly reflects the elegant transition from the Edwardian period towards the Art Deco era, combining flowing organic lines with a sophisticated architectural silhouette. The removable ribbed dome is crowned with a black finial, while the ebony insulated handles allowed safe handling during service.
Daniel & Arter of Birmingham was one of England's best-known manufacturers of high-quality silver-plated tableware. Their EPNS production was appreciated for both its craftsmanship and durability and supplied hotels, restaurants and distinguished households throughout Britain and abroad.
Today this piece is not only a functional antique breakfast accessory but also an impressive decorative object, ideal for an Elle Decor, luxury interior or curated silver collection.
Condition
Good antique condition with normal age-related wear. Some light surface scratches, minor spots consistent with over one hundred years of careful use. The original removable four-egg rack is present. The spirit burner is missing. We’ve given it a light polish to preserve the patina. You can always polish the details more thoroughly if you like it shinier.
