Description from the seller

Important conch-shell cup in heavy transparent Murano crystal, attributed to Ercole Barovier / Barovier & Toso and datable approximately to the 1940s to 1950s.

The form, low and strongly sculptural, is built through deep radial ribbing that opens from the center toward a wide, highly undulated edge. Part of the wall is folded inward with a free, sculptural gesture, breaking the symmetry of the structure and giving the work a particularly dynamic presence.

Inside the glass mass are numerous bubbles embedded and a constellation of gold leaf. The transparency of the crystal allows light to pass through the ribs and optically multiply the golden inclusions, creating continual variations in depth, reflections, and luminosity depending on the viewing point.

The combination of heavy crystal, deep ribbing, gold, and bubbles, together with the organic shaping of the edge, shows strong affinities with Ercole Barovier’s research and with the Barovier & Toso production characteristic of the period.

Ercole Barovier (Murano, 1889-1974) is one of the central figures in the history of 20th-century Venetian glass. Descended from a family of glassmakers active in Murano for centuries, he profoundly contributed to the renewal of Murano production through ongoing research into the expressive qualities of matter, color, and decorative techniques. During his long career he developed numerous experimental series, working with iridescent glasses, metallic inclusions, bubbles, textured surfaces, and large plastic masses. His works have been presented in numerous editions of the Venice Biennale and are today housed in important international museum collections.

Measurements: about 20 x 17-18 x 6-6.5 cm.

Weight: 1181 grams

Condition: perfect. The work is intact, with no chips, cracks, or restorations.

The work will be packed with maximum care, using professional materials suitable for protecting glass during transport.
