Description from the seller

Ercole Barovier / Attr. Barovier & Toso - Triangular crystal cup in straw-yellow iridized glass with bubbles - Murano, circa 1950

Important cup in straw-yellow iridized crystal of substantial thickness, traceable to the production of Barovier & Toso, Murano, circa 1950.

The cup features a distinctive triangular plan with rounded corners, achieved through marked hot shaping. The deep ribbing follows the development of the form and converges toward the base, giving the work a compact structure and a strong plastic character.

The crystal presents a luminous straw-yellow hue and is characterized by numerous gas inclusions distributed throughout the glass mass. The surface iridescence yields mother-of-pearl, golden, pink, and purple reflections, particularly evident inside the piece and on the worked tips.

The combination of solid glass, gaseous inclusions, strong shaping, and iridescent treatment is consistent with the experiments developed by Ercole Barovier in the late 1930s to early 1940s. In this period the glass material assumes a central role in the composition through thickness, light, inclusions, and surface effects.

ERCOLE BAROVIER

Ercole Barovier (Murano, 1889–1974), member of one of the oldest glassmaker families of Murano, was among the main protagonists of the renewal of Venetian glass in the 20th century. He assumed artistic direction of the family enterprise in 1926, developing innovative research on color, material, and working techniques.

In 1936 the family company merged into Ferro Toso Barovier; in 1942, through a subsequent fusion, Barovier & Toso was formed. During his long career Barovier developed some of the most significant experiments in modern Murano glass, from the famous Primavera series to research on iridescences, inclusions, bubbles, gold leaf, and thick glass.

His works earned important international recognitions and are today preserved in the collections of major museums dedicated to glass and decorative arts.

DIMENSIONS

Approximately 18 × 18 cm
Height: about 7 cm
Weight: 1223 grams

CONDITIONS

The work is in excellent condition considering its age. The base retains the original pontil mark, not ground. There are three small “bruises” on the resting ribbing, i.e., limited internal fractures from impact, with no material loss and no compromise to the structural integrity of the piece. They are visible in the latest photographs of the base.

SHIPPING

The work will be packed with the utmost care, using professional materials suitable for protecting glass during transport.

Tracked and insured shipping.
