(Engelse suggestie voor veilingmeester: R. Delaval – Rare French Art Deco hammered pewter vase with geometric decor – France – ca. 1925–1930)
Description
A rare and distinctive French Art Deco tin decorative vase (étain d’art / dinanderie), designed by the French dinandier/silversmith R. Delaval, dating from the interwar period (ca. 1925–1930).
The vase features a classic baluster form and presents a strong graphic Art Deco decoration. The body is finished with a finely hammered ground (martelé), combined with clean, stepped chevrons/pikes filled with meticulously chiselled stipple work (pointillé). The design seamlessly aligns with the heyday of French dinanderie and the formal vocabulary of contemporaries such as Maurice Daurat and Jean Dunand.
Signature & Marks:
Signature: Clearly engraved/signature on the body with the stylized designer’s mark: R. DELAVAL with its characteristic underline.
Base: Featuring the foundry mark ÉTAIN GARANTI in a circle and the impressed model number 45.
Condition:
In exceptionally good, authentic condition. The vase retains an untouched, natural dark patina that beautifully enhances the relief and contrast of the engravings. No dents, cracks or restorations; the rim and base are nicely straight and true. Only minimal, normal signs of aging for its age.
