Napoleon III era ormolu mantel clock in bronze doré by Henri Picard (1831–1864), dating from ca. 1850–1900, with a Paris mechanical movement; height 28 cm, width 40 cm, depth 13 cm, weight 7 kg, not in working order, with original balance wheel included and sold without a winding key.
Description from the seller
Superb mantel clock in gilded bronze from the Napoléon III era (Second Empire, 19th century), bearing the sunken mark of the famous Parisian founder-gilder Henri PICARD.
The clock features a very beautiful neoclassical composition depicting a young woman draped in antique style, pensive and holding a floral garland, leaning against the horological cabinet. The white enamel dial has Roman numerals for the hours. The whole rests on a base richly adorned with interlaced motifs, acanthus leaves and Rocaille volute scrolls.
Presence of the stamped seal « PICARD » (Henri Picard) clearly struck on the bronze terrace (see photos), guaranteeing the provenance and craftsmanship of one of the most renowned gilder-goldsmiths of the Second Empire.
Henri Picard, active in Paris between 1831 and 1864 (notably rue Perche then rue de Thorigny), was one of the cabinet bronziers favored by Emperor Napoléon III. He is famous for supplying the furniture bronzes for the Napoléon III Apartments at the Louvre and for his collaborations with Raingo Frères or the Manufacture de Sèvres.
