Description from the seller
RARE RELIEF SCULPTURE - SHIVA
Rare and superb statue of the Hindu deity Shiva in pink sandstone
This sculpture shows Shiva, one of the three main deities of the Hindu pantheon, god of creation, destruction, and transformation.
He is depicted here standing, slightly swaying, richly adorned with jewelry.
He is shown with four arms, two of which hold his attributes; the trident in his right hand and the naga (snake) winding around his neck, symbolizing his destructive nature.
Indeed, the trident is a reminder of Shiva's warrior nature, for it is the weapon with which he defeats many demons such as Ravana or Andhaka.
Meanwhile, the naga, with its dangerous and dreaded aspect in India, serves here as an echo to the god's personality.
He also presents other attributes such as the ascetic's hair bun or a third eye, the eye of knowledge, allowing one to reflect the ambivalent nature of this deity, both yogin lord and destroying god.
At his feet is carved his mount, Nandi (the bull), whose head has not survived.
Magnificent representation wonderfully preserved.
Repair at the feet (one arm and Nandi's head missing).
India, Medieval period, pink sandstone - North India, 10th-12th century
Dimensions: height 59.5 cm - (height 67.5 cm with base) - width 27 cm - weight 20.3 kg.
