The lithograph shows a dramatic view of the port of Bordeaux engulfed in flames. Several large wooden merchant ships are burning simultaneously on the Garonne, releasing dense columns of dark smoke that darken the sky at sunset. In the foreground, numerous lifeboats and rescue boats try to save the sailors and recover the floating debris.

The wide white outer margin is clean and preserved. The paper shows only a very light and uniform browning, entirely natural for a support that is over 150 years old. The dense descriptive caption at the bottom and the names of the creators are perfectly intact and legible.
