Description from the seller
Important French Art Deco mantel clock with two cassolette/lamps
– Antelopes
– Onyx / green and cream marble
– 1930
Description:
Very beautiful French Art Deco fireplace garniture, composed of a substantial mantel clock adorned with an imposing sculpture representing 2 stylized antelopes, with the elegant and dynamic lines characteristic of Art Deco animal sculpture.
The sculpture features a patinated black finish, accompanied by two matching cassolettes.
Condition and restoration:
The set is presented in an antique state with normal signs of use and aging.
It is important to note that one of the two cassolettes has undergone an old restoration.
Some stone slabs were reassembled and glued. Four small fixing screws are currently missing.
Despite this restoration, the slabs are currently held together and the cassotte retains its structure as well as its decorative appearance.
Marks of restoration, old repairs, small cracks, marks, stains and irregularities are visible on some stone slabs.
The clock also shows age and use, notably on the dial and metal parts.
These defects are visible in the photographs.
The stone has been carefully cleaned, not aiming to completely remove the traces and patina related to age.
The whole presents a remarkable geometric composition typical of Art Deco, created in a decorative combination of cream-veined stone/onyx and green onyx, with patinated metal elements.
The animal is depicted in motion, with a long body, extended legs and two long ivory-colored horns.
The sculpture has a patinated black finish and seems to be made of patinated cast metal, probably régule/spelter. The horns are ivory/cream colored.
The clock base is particularly decorative, composed of several geometric stone/onyx elements in shades of white, cream, beige and green, with beautiful natural veining. The stepped construction and geometric lines reinforce its Art Deco character.
The dial, geometrical and trapezoidal, with black stylized numerals and markers, has black stylized index/numbers and a metallic rim. It is completed by Art Deco-style hands.
At the back there is a manually wound mechanical movement with bell strike. The movement and its brass bell are visible in the photographs. A numeric marking is present on the movement; it strikes once every half hour and several times on the hour.
The two matching cassolettes repeat the same geometric architecture and materials as the clock. They harmoniously complete the garniture and, together with the clock, form a particularly decorative ensemble.
