AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Figure of Guanyin (Avalokiteśvara) seated in meditation, carved wood (probably camphor wood), red lacquer and gold leaf. South China, probably Fujian, Qing dynasty, 18th–19th century.

Tall removable crown with chiselled petals, adorned with Amitābha seated. Serene face with half-closed eyes, long earlobes, shawl falling from the shoulders, hands joined, legs crossed under an ample drapery. At the back, an open and empty consecration cavity (zangfu), evidence of cultic use. Fixing hole under the base.

Provenance: French private collection, same stock as a Qing-era Chinese panel.

Condition: wear, losses and flaking of lacquer and gilding consistent with age. Wood shrinkage cracks. Old traces of wood-boring insects under the base, eroded corner. Cavity cover and base missing. The crown shows a lighter interior than the body and may be an adaptation or an old replacement. See photos.

Dimensions: H. 24 cm, L. 13 cm,
Weight: 800 g

Shipping: tracked and insured parcel, reinforced packaging (bubble wrap and double cardboard), shipment within 3 business days after payment.
