Description from the seller
Exceptional Old Doll of the “Bru Jne” Type – Bisque-Head and Leather Body (19th Century)
Object Description
Magnificent and rare French collectible doll dating from the last quarter of the 19th century (circa 1880–1890). This model illustrates the refinement and excellence of head-makers of the golden age of French artistic ceramics. It stands 53 cm tall and comes with its stand, ideal for immediate display in a shop window.
Historical Context & Markings
The stamp "BRU.JNER": The head is inlaid at the back with the inscription "BRU.JNER 11" (where the abbreviation "Jne" historically means "Young", used by manufacturers of the era such as the famous Bru house to authenticate and sign their creations against other branches or competitors).
Punctuation & details: Also found is the workshop letter "W" embossed at the base of the neck and on the top of the biscuit shoulder plate, ensuring harmony of the whole, as well as painter’s control numbers written in red.
Technical & Artistic Characteristics
Head and Shoulder Plate: Fine biscuit porcelain head, delicately matte, offering a form with soft contours and a complexion subtly enhanced by a light, hand-painted blush (cheeks and lip contours). The eyes are glass enamel with a deep, expressive gaze, highlighted by hand-painted eyelashes in keeping with the era’s standards.
Calotte and Hairstyle: Presence of the original calotte made of cardboard/paper mâché fixed with remnants of animal glue and era cork. Wig attached, I believe.
Body: Traditional body in white chamois leather, fully hand-sewn with rigorous saddle-stitch seams. The body is generously stuffed with original wood shavings (excelsior), giving it a realistic weight and excellent stance.
Condition
Overall: The piece shows an authentic, homogeneous, old patina full of charm, bearing witness to its passage through the ages.
Wear Details: Noted a notable impact/wear on one of the arms as well as a small wear hole localized on the chest at the leather body level, not affecting the overall visual presence of the piece. The head porcelain is sound.
