Description from the seller

Bronze pocket watch holder “onion” with two fauns, 19th century

Elegant and rare bronze pocket watch holder, conceived as a small sculptural object for the table and datable, by stylistic characteristics and quality of workmanship, to the second half of the 19th century.

The object stands out for its strongly decorative setup and refined bronze work, with a structure composed of a rich rocaille base, modeled with volutes, leaves, natural elements and wide shell motifs. In the center develops the support intended to hold a round pocket watch, the so-called “onion” watch.

Particularly spectacular is the upper part, where the watch dial would be framed by a garland of leaves and grape clusters, rendered with notable attention to detail. The vegetal decoration features finely modeled elements, including leaves, tendrils and small bunches, with some parts gilded to create a refined contrast with the dark bronze surface.

To support the composition are two fauns, an element of particular collectible interest. The two mythological figures, depicted in a dynamic and symmetric stance, are characterized by robust bodies, goat-like legs and accurately modeled anatomical details. The fauns merge harmoniously into the composition, almost as if to bear the crown intended for the watch.

The theme of fauns, grapevines and grape clusters directly recalls the ornamental repertoire of classical mythology and the neobaroque tradition, much appreciated in the production of artistic bronzes and decorative objects in the second half of the 19th century.

The surface preserves a beautiful dark brown patina, with evident highlights on the more protruding parts and traces of decorative gilding. The rich and lively modeling, together with the complexity of the base and the presence of the mythological figures, gives the object a decidedly sculptural character, going beyond the simple function of a watch holder.

An interesting example of 19th-century decorative bronze, particularly suitable for collectors of art objects, bronzes and antiquarian curiosities.
