West German pottery vase Ravenna, a modernist abstract ceramic piece designed by Bodo Mans for Bay Keramik ca. 1961, glazed ceramic with vibrant color blocks and a glossy finish, model 1032-20, dimensions 11 cm wide by 21 cm high by 8 cm deep, in good condition with age-related wear and a slightly chipped underside.
Description from the seller
Superb and rare collectible vase in West German pottery, designed by the famous designer Bodo Mans for the prestigious Bay Keramik manufactory in 1961. This model features the mythical and highly sought-after "Ravenna" decoration, one of the most emblematic creations of the modernist period (Mid-Century Modern). The abstract and asymmetrical pattern, heavily influenced by the style of Pablo Picasso and the works of Roger Capron, is characterized by vibrant blocks of color (turquoise blue, brick red, olive green, violet and black) partitioned in relief. These shapes contrast beautifully with white speckled areas with a rough texture. The piece presents an asymmetrical rectangular pebble-like shape, introduced specifically by Bay Keramik in the early 1960s to sublime the avant-garde decorations of Bodo Mans.
The technique called shaping in the high-quality red clay typical of the Westerwald region and is coated with a complex glaze combining blocks of bright colors with vitrified gloss and dark and matte separators in slight relief, offering a unique tactile texture interplay.
