Description from the seller
Grande pendule sculpture « Mignon ». d'après Moreau
Young woman with a mandolin
Plaster patinated bronze
France
circa 1900-1920
51 cm
Elegant and imposing French mantel clock sculpture, “Mignon,” after Moreau, dating likely from the early 20th century, around 1900-1920.
This highly expressive decorative clock combines horology and sculpture in a composition typical of the French Belle Époque taste.
The sculpture depicts a graceful young woman in period dress, delicately holding a mandolin against her body.
Beside her stands the clock on a column richly adorned with vegetal and classical motifs. The whole rests on a substantial molded base and displays a fine old brown-bronze patina.
The base bears its original metallic cartouche bearing the inscription “MIGNON – par Moreau,” allowing identification of the famous Mignon model, which appears in different variants of French mantel clocks and fireplace garnitures.
The ivory dial is particularly decorative, with black Arabic numerals and vintage hands, and bears at its bottom the inscription “MADE IN FRANCE.”
The mechanical movement is accessible from the back (movement to be serviced, the winder is wound but does not start).
Dimensions: height 51 cm; length 24 cm; weight approx. 3.5 kg.
A beautiful French decorative collectible piece, especially interesting for its substantial size of 51 cm, its romantic mandolin subject, its Mignon by Moreau cartouche, and its decorative presence.
Ideal in a classic interior, Belle Époque, Art Nouveau, curiosity cabinet, or among a collection of French antique clocks and decorative objects.
France – early 20th century, circa 1900-1920.
