An 11th–13th century silver Crusaders Era pectoral cross, 39 × 27 mm and 4.8 g, with a central cross and extensive engraved ornament, broad arms and a substantial original suspension loop, in very good + condition.
Description from the seller
An impressive Crusaders Era silver pectoral cross, dating approximately to the 11th–13th century, a transformative period associated with the gradual Christianization of Scandinavia.
This example is particularly striking for its combination of substantial dimensions, precious metal and extensive engraved decoration.
The cross measures 39 × 27 mm and weighs 4.8 g. Its broad arms and solid construction give it a remarkably substantial presence for a personal devotional pendant.
A Cross within the Cross
The focal point of the entire composition lies at the intersection of the four arms.
Here, the craftsman engraved a clearly recognizable secondary cross, repeating the overall form of the pendant itself.
The result is an intriguing “cross within a cross” arrangement: the entire object forms the Christian symbol, while the same symbol appears once again at its centre.
This smaller cross acts as the visual core from which the surrounding decoration extends across the four arms.
Richly Engraved Surface
Unlike undecorated cast crosses, almost the entire visible face of this example carries ornament.
Each arm displays a combination of incised linear, geometric and ornamental motifs. Some lines emphasize the borders of the pendant, while others form more elaborate internal patterns.
The contrast between the clearly defined central cross and the surrounding ornament gives the piece considerable visual depth.
Broad, expanding terminals further strengthen its monumental appearance. Although only 39 mm long, the cross has the visual presence of a considerably larger object.
A substantial integral suspension loop survives at the top, clearly demonstrating the pendant's original wearable function.
The broad, flat construction provided an excellent surface for the engraved decoration, while its 4.8 g weight gave the small object a tangible presence.
The silver retains a naturally aged surface with darker patinated areas and characteristic traces of wear. Raised portions appear lighter in places, allowing parts of the ancient decoration to stand out particularly well.
Despite its considerable age, the central cross, overall silhouette and much of the engraved ornament remain clearly visible.
