Description from the seller
XVII Provinces of Belgium or Lower Germany
Created by the German cartographer and engraver Tobias Conrad Lotter in Augsburg, 1758-1760. Son-in-law of M. Seutter, Lotter reissued this map with renewed cartouches.
The map shows the Seventeen Provinces of the Netherlands (present-day Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg) and surrounding border regions. 10 of the Provinces are under Spanish rule, the remaining 7 Provinces are 'free'.
With a very extensive title cartouche, full Latin title and several mythological figures. Mars, Mercury, Neptune and Minerva symbolize war, commerce, seafaring and wisdom, which underlie the prosperity of the XVII Provinces. Also depicted are the coats of arms of the Seventeen Provinces (including duchies, counties and lordships).
In excellent condition, clear coloring from the period. On verso: blank, remaining acid-free tape at the top edge. Map size approx 59x50 cm, on sheet 67x53 cm.
